THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE’S IN …...ORANGE

Colouring The Problem Of Security.

Tackling AV and IT equipment theft is becoming a major issue in Education.  With insurance premiums sky rocketing, it is not always viable to pay the excess to replace the stolen hardware, leaving the decision to replace or go without.  I

n tackling the issue of theft and equipment damage, particularly in the AV market, the emphasis is moving to pro-active solutions to discourage such activity, with projector manufacturers now playing their part in finding a solution.

Whilst the first few models on the market were no more than brightly painted versions of existing models, the need for a thought out solution was required if this issue was to tackled successfully.  With projector prices on basic models tumbling (some now below the price of lamp replacement!), the technology would be wasted and so most security projectors are now on XGA platforms with either higher light output or additional connectivity and performance features.

The best models available will offer features such as password security and splash screen warning logos, with some models now even having sonic alarms for additional theft protection.  So the Orange is here to stay, at least for the time being, and with some manufacturers offering the features without a premium, the buyers can now be secure in the knowledge they are getting better value than ever.

How Close Can You Throw?

Well apparently very close according to some of the leading projector platforms, including 3M’s new range of DMS projectors.  Historically the combined installation of interactive boards and projectors has often been compromised by height and distance, due to the type of users and projector technologies.

In reaction to the demand for close throw installations, 3M and other leading brands have recognized the issues faced by installers and users alike and developed projector solutions for screens and interactive boards without compromise to the image quality and user operation.  3M’s new DMS projectors can be positioned only 30 inches from the screen yet produce a 60” image!  This is three times the ratio of the most standard data projectors.

NEC has its own solutions for short throw projection with the WT series projectors, which use reflective mirror technology as well as wide angle lens.  The new wall mount bracket enables an incredibly close positioning of the projector to screen whether in table top or wall mounted position.

Any Alternatives? – Sahara, Toshiba and Sanyo all have alternative short throw projectors, with Hitachi having launched an integrated and stand alone projector version in December 2007.  For Hitachi, this is a major advantage because they are the only manufacturer to have an interactive board and board and projector line up and the one stop Interactive board and board and projector line up and the one stop solution could prove a major market advantage to them.

The Hitachi PA100/EDA100 unit delivers a flicker free XGA image, 2000 lumens and a 60” projection screen at only 42 cm.  A PIN lock and MyScreen PIN lock, a Kensington lock attachment, a stainless steel security bar and tamper-proof labelling improve security on multiple levels.  An email alert provides additional security when the projector is detached from the network.

BenQ also offer their MP771 which provides a massive 74” image from just 40” away.  It also features a powerful 3,000 lumen lamp for virtually any lighting condition.
